So...
I was entertaining the idea of posting the mixes that I've done but then
I thought better of it. Seeing as how litigious the world has become in
just a few short years and that's not even taking into account the RIAA.
I decided it would be in my best legal interests if I were not to post anything
that might contain even a thought of copyrighted material. Now if there
were kind hearted people out there willing to pay my legal bills/fines/court
costs that come with a fun lawsuit from a perturbed RIAA or what have you
then I'd me more than willing to post said mixes. Until then no dice. I'll
say this though, some of my mixes (real old ones) are still floating around
on the internets and the intraweb and going back and forth through a series
of tubes and may be found with a little bit of searching.
Funny thing is if you click on "Elements" you'll see that I'm about to start uploading samples to this site. These are samples that I created with my own time and equipment and no vinyl, all original. I'll also be including drum loops and other sounds and strangeness.
Why is this funny? Well, there is a new copyright out there called "Creative Commons" and it's copyright for the next generation. It gives the artist a great deal of control over their works. Me, I use the Non Commercial Sampling Plus for all my sample sets that I'm putting together. It allows anyone to use my samples and redistribute them to anyone and everyone. Two catches, you can't make a profit off the samples (Selling them on a sample CD or using them in something that would be sold be it CD, MP3, video game or movie) and you have to give me credit however you use it. Not bad considering... Then over in Europe it has been suggested that copyright ends after fifty years and that people be allowed to sample whatever they want with a few minor restrictions. The restrictions are there to keep any more Puff "I mumbled incoherently over instrumentals from David Bowie and the Police" Daddy wannabes from becoming sample rip off artists.
Why no vinyl? Well, I have sampled a great deal of vinyl but a good deal of it could still fall under copyright restrictions. I don't have the time right now to look up the copyright holders on any of the vinyl that I have sampled so far. Nor do I have the money to hire an attorney to look up all that for me. And every time I mention getting a young nubile live in assistant to the evil one I get dirty looks (Bad Kind) for the next couple of weeks.
If you look under CH2CH you'll see many of my newest vinyl purchases listed on there and over the next couple weeks I will be adding the rest of the vinyl that I own to that list. What I'd be willing to do is if someone wanted samples off of it, I'd give said person the info off the vinyl and we could try to clear the samples ourselves. I like to think it'd be easier to do with more than one person working on it.
But all is not lost. I'm working on new mixes for people that don't mind some of their stuff being out here free for the taking. They realize that it gets their name out there to the unwashed masses. Also I'll be posting a PDF or two on how to create your own mixes for all those budding DJ types out there. And if you are an artist that would like me to remix some of your work please send an email to mixes@djhawz.com.
